5 New & Unmissable Wedding Trends For 2014

Advice, Colour Inspiration, Décor, Planning

Traditional… whimsical… rustic… romantic… themed… vintage… there are as many kinds of weddings as there are couples. The time has come to add some Fun with a capital F – here are some of the newest and funnest wedding trends rolling in right now. Which one do you love?

Toys

Toys have been slowly appearing in weddings since 2012 – and we love it! They add a touch of fun, humour and even nostalgia to any proceedings, no matter how formal they are. Toys are no longer just a kids’ thing – so whether you have your childhood teddy bear on your top table, or you give your guests small toys as favours (Lego minifigs anyone?), everyone is guaranteed to love it.

Origami

Paper crafts have long been a part of weddings, and have become commonplace thanks to DIY. But, just as with any crafts, the ideas come in waves – and the latest wave is all about origami. This ancient Japanese art is so perfect for weddings, we’re so glad to see it come into prominence! It’s a no-brainer really – paper is available in all the colours of the rainbow, and the design possibilities are endless. Another bonus – you don’t have to be particularly skilled, because pretty much everyone knows how to fold paper! And, most of the time all you need is just a scissors and a ruler, and you’re good to go. Beautiful.

Personalised Art

We’re so pleased to say our guide to fab floral invites had many of you sighing – and that’s because personalised art (in particular watercolour touches) is definitely making its mark on weddings this year. It’s absolutely perfect for couples who want something colourful AND personalised at the same time. If you or one of your closest friends are artistically talented, get them to help with your décor plans – you can create fun centrepieces, interesting place cards or the sweetest garlands or collages to display around your venue. If you fancy adding a bit of an artistic touch to dessert, these adorable personalised sugar cookies by Lizzie May could also be a winner.

Unusual Place Card Holders

Pebbles were quite popular in the last few years, but quite a few brides found that doing it DIY-style didn’t yield the results they were looking for (what do you know, it takes a bit of practice to write beautifully with a paintbrush…). Nowadays it’s much easier – the tide is turning towards unusual yet easy-to-make place card holders – and we love it because you can still print your beautiful cards, then put them into something fun. This way, you don’t have to worry about the letters coming out all wonky! And that’s always a good thing. Our favourite – the thread spool holders (leave the thread on for a touch of colour, or get bare ones and paint them – or leave them natural)!

Polka Dots

Fun, girly, colourful, gorgeous – they’re a perfect way to add colour, or you can go white-on-white for a timeless classy look! Ideal for spring and summer weddings, polka dots can’t help but make everyone smile. If you’re looking just for a touch, go for one item – how about your napkins, one tier of your cake, a brolly, or dotted buttons on your bridesmaids’ dresses? They make the best impact when used sparingly but in highly visible places. We’re so glad to see polka dots featured more and more at all kinds of weddings – and we can only hope they’ll be even bigger next year.
