News, Celebs & PR

There may have been fewer weddings in 2013, but certainly the superstition didn’t seem to affect those who were ready to take that huge step towards holy matrimony – the engagement. A whole crowd of celebs major and minor declared their love, and fashion magazines had their dose of glee every time a new ring was unveiled. Here are the five engagements (and one ‘maybe’) that got the most press time last year.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

Kim Kardashian isn’t even from these shores, but of course her engagement received worldwide attention – we wonder if there’s anyone left still asking ‘Kim who???’ Perhaps the event wouldn’t be such a big deal if her husband-to-be was someone less colourful than her intended – Kanye West himself, one of the biggest-selling music artists on the planet. The two made the headlines when their daughter was born (they named her North in case you missed it, so her full name is… yep… North West), and then for the engagement – Kanye proposed on Kim’s 33rd birthday (in October 2013) with a 15-carat ring. Stay tuned for the wedding hysteria, those two definitely aren’t going to have a private ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends.

Scarlett Johansson & Romain Dauriac

Here’s to Scarlett Johansson’s second-time-lucky union – her French boyfriend Romain Dauriac proposed in the autumn of 2013 with an unusual Art Deco-style ring, after nine months of dating. Well, when you know – you know! In contrast to Kimye above, the couple are keeping their relationship private, although of course the paparazzi are never too far away, as Scarlett is one of the most admired women in the world. There’s no wedding date yet, but we expect a very classy affair, whenever it may be. And what could be more romantic than marrying a gorgeous Frenchman?

Perrie Edwards & Zayn Malik

That loud crash you may have heard in the second half of August 2013 was the sound of thousands – no, millions – of teenage hearts breaking in unison. Why? Because Zayn Malik from One Direction proposed to Perrie Edwards of Little Mix. When boybands reach such milestones, it’s much more than just an engagement – it’s positively mind-boggling. Is anyone here old enough to remember what happened when the Backstreet Boys started getting engaged and married? Well it was just like this, but less awful, as there was no Twitter to absorb all the tears. However, Perrie is such a sweetie and so talented too, he’s one lucky guy – and the best thing is, they already have the entertainment for their wedding taken care of!

Frankie Sanford & Wayne Bridge

Springtime was the right time to get engaged for Frankie Sanford of The Saturdays and footballer Wayne Bridge, and it was such a cute event too - Wayne had surprised Frankie by dressing up her dogs in bride-and-groom outfits to carry in the ring. After the event, Frankie herself said in an interview: “I think for people who aren’t dog fans it’s a bit of a weird proposal, so I feel like I only want to tell people who like dogs.” Well, we like dogs, and well done Wayne for organising it! Weddings between sports stars and pop stars are the reason Hello magazine exists, so we’ll probably get the full exclusive on this one… stay tuned.

Ginnifer Goodwin & Josh Dallas

Ginnifer Goodwin’s boyfriend Josh Dallas proposed in the autumn, and they’re now expecting their first baby. We predict they won’t be in a rush to set a wedding date while they’re preparing to be parents, and rightly so – any bride who had to juggle wedding planning and an impending birth can attest it’s like going double-mad. On the other hand, this couple can certainly afford a wedding planner to take care of all the details, so you never know… Ginnifer starred most memorably in a wonderful romantic comedy He’s Just Not Into You, in a leading role as a girl who’s learning a lesson about letting love happen instead of chasing it. Clearly, it’s not been the case of real life imitating art in this case, as the couple appear to be very much in love.

And the Cliffhanger Award goes to… Pippa Middleton and Nico Jackson. Are they or aren’t they? A top USA celebrity magazine has announced that the question was popped while the couple were on holiday in India in December, however no confirmation has come forth as yet, except from that very reliable source called “the source close to the couple” who said they are in fact NOT engaged. To all those who think Pippa should marry Harry Windsor – it could still happen, you know!
